‘Καθημερινή’ «Τουρκία: Σύλληψη στρατηγού για επίθεση το 2009»

Στρατηγός του τουρκικού στρατού συνελήφθη κατηγορούμενος ότι ήταν ο «εγκέφαλος» του σχεδίου για την έκρηξη μιας νάρκης που προκάλεσε το θάνατο έξι στρατιωτών στη νοτιοανατολική Τουρκία πριν από 18 μήνες, μεταδίδουν σήμερα τα μέσα ενημέρωσης.
Οι αρχές πίστευαν αρχικά ότι πίσω από την επίθεση αυτή, που σημειώθηκε στις 27 Μαΐου του 2009 και προκάλεσε επίσης την καταστροφή στρατιωτικού οχήματος, βρισκόταν το Εργατικό Κόμμα του Κουρδιστάν (PKK).
Ωστόσο εντοπίστηκε μια ηχογραφημένη κασέτα στην οποία ο στρατηγός Ζεκί Ες έδινε εντολές για την τοποθέτηση της νάρκης στην επαρχία Χακιάρι, διευκρινίζουν τα μέσα ενημέρωσης.
Ο στρατηγός συνελήφθη όταν έγινε γνωστή η ανάμειξή του στην επίθεση. Η έκρηξη σημειώθηκε την ώρα που γίνονταν νέες προσπάθειες για την επίλυση της διένεξης με την κουρδική μειονότητα της Τουρκίας.
Μετά την έκρηξη, οι τουρκικές αεροπορικές δυνάμεις πραγματοποίησαν αεροπορικές επιδρομές κατά ύποπτων βάσεων του PKK κατά μήκος των συνόρων με το βόρειο Ιράκ.

‘Hürriyet’ «Turkish military court arrests general over 2009 mine deaths»

A Turkish general has been arrested by a military court in connection to his alleged role in a mine blast that killed six soldiers last year.
The arrest of Bursa Gendarmerie Area Commander Gen. Zeki Es comes after a voice recording found on the Internet allegedly shows him taking responsibility for the laying of a mine in Çukurca in the eastern province of Hakkari, which killed six soldiers on May 27, 2009.
The lawyers for the families of Master Sgt. Ziya Bener and privates Kadir Dumlu, Kemal Özevin, Adil Yıldız, Cafer Çelik and Deniz Demirci are expected to come to Ankara on Monday and file a criminal complaint in the light of Es’ arrest.
Authorities originally said the outlawed Kurdistan Worker’s Party, or PKK, had detonated the mine by remote control. Later, however, a wiretapped conversation between Es, who was the 20th Gendarmerie Border Brigade Commander in Çukurca at the time, and his superior, Hakkari Division Commander Gen. Gürbüz Kaya, that was released online June 25 contradicted the official line.
On the tape, Es allegedly said the mine was planted at the site under his orders and was not detonated by remote control.
Es allegedly also said his intention was only to protect Turkish soldiers and that he was ready to accept full responsibility.
“We will get over this worry by tomorrow evening [after a military operation] but I am shattered by this worry,” Es told his superior.
“It is not important at all. There is nothing to worry about,” Kaya allegedly replied. “Let me tell [you] something: We are doing the best we can. We are fighting here with our lives at stake. Some people will make small mistakes in the scope of this struggle.”
The Demirci family filed a criminal complaint on the matter in Van the day after the recording became available online. Van Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office started an investigation on the matter before transferring the file to their military counterparts citing a lack of jurisdiction. The General Staff’s Prosecutor’s Office then received the file, which stated the mines were laid by the Turkish military as noted by the phone conversation.
As the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review went to press late Sunday, it was not clear whether or not Kaya, or any other members of the military who might have connection to the case, would also be arrested.
